Who We Are: Gulch, Hardcore from Santa Cruz
We're Gulch, a hardcore band from Santa Cruz, California. This store holds our merch, and this post is the short version of who we are and where we come from.
Where did Gulch start?
We formed in Santa Cruz in 2016 and later made San Jose our main base. Northern California is all over what we did: the shows, the people around them and the records we made there.
Who was in the band?
The lineup most people know played together from 2019 to 2022:
- Elliot Morrow: vocals
- Cole Kakimoto: guitar
- Christian Castillo: guitar
- Mike Durrett: bass
- Sammy Ciaramitaro: drums
Elliot, Cole and Sammy were there from the start. Tim Flegal played bass from 2016 to 2019, before Mike joined, and Christian came in on second guitar the same year.
What does Gulch sound like?
Hardcore first. You'll also hear grindcore, metalcore and powerviolence in it: short, fast, heavy songs that don't waste a second.
What did we put out?
We started with a demo in 2017, Demolition of Human Construct, and followed it with the EP Burning Desire to Draw Last Breath in 2018. Our album, Impenetrable Cerebral Fortress, came out in 2020. After that came a split with Sunami in 2021 and a cover of "Monkey Gone To Heaven" in 2022.
How did it end?
In September 2021 we announced that Gulch was coming to an end. Our last show was at Sound and Fury in Los Angeles on July 31, 2022, and we came back for one more night on December 30, 2023.
Where does the merch come in?
Merch was always a big part of Gulch, and this store keeps it going: our logo, our records and our artwork on tees, long sleeves, crewnecks and hoodies.
